The Manitoba rink led by Jennifer Jones secured first place at the end of the round robin at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts this morning with a 10-5 win over Alberta in eight ends.
Jones and Alberta’s Val Sweeting entered the draw with identical 9-1 records, but Jones capitalized on opportunities this morning starting with three points with the hammer in the first and then a steal of three in the fifth end.
Early on she was able to hold Sweeting to singles when Alberta had last rock advantage and that allowed Manitoba to build up a six point lead after five. They traded doubles in the next two ends and after Sweeting was held to a single in the eighth, she conceded.
Jones will again face Sweeting in the page one-two playoff game later tonight. A win there sends Jones straight through to the finals on Sunday. A loss doesn’t eliminate hope for the Manitobans, the loser of that game gets a second chance to qualify for the championship game tomorrow in a semi-final matchup.
The opponent in that semi-final will be the winner of the page three-four playoff game on Saturday morning. That game is between Saskatchewan’s Val Sweeting and two-time defending champion Rachel Homan and her Team Canada rink.
Homan faced elimination this morning, needing a win against Tracey Horgan and her team from Northern Ontario.
Homan and Horgan were tied at four by after seven ends, but a blank in eight and a steal of two in nine left Homan in a position to advance. She ran Horgan out of rocks in the the tenth to post a 6-4 win and squeak into the playoffs as the fourth seed.
Team Canada defeated Saskatchewan 6-3 on the first day of competition.
