St. Theresa Point School Opens

A new school is open in St. Theresa Point. The grand opening of the first of two school projects in the community was held today, with Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan this morning. The Grade 5 – 8 middle school will have approximately 350 students in 14 classrooms, a gym and a library. Specialty classrooms for computers, science, home economics industrial arts and multipurpose rooms are also part of the project. A second school, for Junior Kindergarten to Grade 4 students, will be built as an addition to the high school, to accommodate 500 students. The Federal Governments portion of the bill for the schools is about 38-million dollars.

Capsized Boat - Sandy Bay

One man has been treated in hospital, one man is still missing after a boat flipped in high winds and capsized last night. It happened in the south basin of Lake Manitoba to a 25-year old man and a 22-year old man from Sandy Bay. Ebb and Flow First Nation Fire Department has a boat in the water searching for the missing man and search and rescue planes are searching as well. Members of the community and Police are also patrolling the waterfront.

Flin Flon Stabbing

One Flin Flon man is dead and another is charged with second degree murder. RCMP officers were called out Saturday in the early morning hours to an apparent stabbing. A 31 year old male was taken from a home to hospital where he died. He’s been identified as John Kellighan Eyres. Twenty five year old Mitchell Whitbread is charged with second degree murder. He’ll appear in court today, an autopsy is also scheduled for today.

SCO Rally at the Legislative Grounds

The Southern Chiefs Organization is organizing a rally on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature late this morning. Grand Chief Morris J. Swan Shannacappo says it is to draw attention to the situation of First Nations people affected by the flooding of Lake Manitoba. The SCO media release says there is no end in sight and no return date for many First Nations residents affected by the artificial flooding of 2011. The rally is scheduled from 11 am to 3 pm.

New SCO Chief to be Elected in September

The head of Manitoba’s Southern Chiefs Organization is stepping down to return to his home community. Grand Chief Morris J. Swan Shannacappo has been elected chief of Rolling River First Nation, and with the consent of the Southern Chiefs will stay on as Grand Chief until a by-election can be held in September. Shannacappo made the announcement on the S-C-O show on NCI FM last evening. Shannacappo is staying on to continue the fight over the flooding of Manitoba First Nations in 2011. He is serving his second term as Grand Chief, first elected in June 2007.

Fatal Highway 242 Collision

A young Manitoba man is dead after a two vehicle collision this morning. A Nissan Maxima driven by a 21-year old male from Brandon collided head on with a semitrailer on Highway 242, 4 kilometres south of the TransCanada. He was declared dead at the scene, the 37 year old driver of the truck was not hurt. Eyewitnesses say the Maxima crossed the centre line into the path of the truck. The investigation continues...

Vehicle Description in Fatality

RCMP in the Parkland area are looking for a Ford Taurus that is about ten years old. Officers say the vehicle is considered “of interest” in the investigation of a fatal hit and run that left a First Nations man dying on the side of the road. The 22-year old from Valley River First Nation was hit a week ago on Highway 5, northwest of Grandview. The Taurus being sought is listed as being between a 2000 and 2003 version. Dauphin and Grandview Detachments are investigating.

Split Lake Shotgun Blast

A shotgun blast hit a 14-year old and sunk the canoe he was paddling Saturday evening. The youth and a 23-year old Split Lake man were on their way home from duck hunting when the incident occurred, 30 kilometers south of Split Lake. The two were able to make it to shore and to two paramedics who were in the area. The youth was treated at the Nursing station and transported to Winnipeg where he's listed in stable condition.

Satellite TV Theft

RCMP in Manitoba and Industry Canada have cracked down on the alleged theft of satellite television. Two search warrants were executed simultaneously at a St. Mary’s Road business and a Lodge Avenue home yesterday. Nine computers and 144 satellite receivers were among the equipment seized. Officers also found uncertified wireless security cameras that operate on a frequency in Canada reserved for airplane communications. RCMP want to remind the public it is illegal to steal satellite t-v signals and to sell equipment that allows that theft. A 29-year old Winnipeg resident faces charges, with more charges expected to be laid.

Interlake Grow Op Bust

Manitoba RCMP have broken up a grow operation in the Interlake. Officers executing a search warrant at an Ashern home yesterday afternoon found 83 marijuana plants. The estimated street value of the seizure is over 80-thousand dollars. They also discovered grow equipment and drug paraphernalia. A 51-year-old man from Ashern faces charges.

Winnipeg Police find more than Stolen Car

Winnipeg Police were investigating a stolen car, and found much more. Tuesday night officers arrested a man at a Ferry Road home, but officers saw drugs too. A subsequent search warrant found marijuana, a shotgun, a handgun, ammunition, cash, brass knuckles and more. 43-year old Lorne Wayne Corlett faces numerous charges.

Alleged Manitoba Child Molester Arrested

The long arm of the law has reached from Brandon all the way to Spain to arrest a man charged with sexual assaults of teenage boys. Ian Smy was charged with eight counts of sexual assault three years ago. The allegations date back to the 1980's, involving boys aged 11 to 15 years. He missed a 2010 court appearance and officers suspected that he’d fled the country. The Manitoba Integrated Warrant Apprehension Unit, at the request of Brandon Police, tracked the suspect and with help of European authorities, he was taken back into custody at a home in Spain this week. Authorities have initiated extradition proceedings to bring him back to face trial in Brandon.

Parkland Fatal Hit and Run

RCMP need your help in the roadside death of a Valley River First Nation man. A 22-year old man was found at the side of Highway 5 northwest of Grandview at about 10:40 last night. Passersby tried to help the man, while they called emergency officials. The victim was taken to hospital where he died. It's believed he was the victim of a hit and run collision. It was dark and rainy at the time. An autopsy is scheduled. The RCMP is asking for anyone with information to call the Parkland Detachment or Crimestoppers.

Break and Enter in Progress

An RCMP Officer eventually came out on top of a struggle with a break-in suspect near Roblin. Officers were sent to a break-and-enter in progress Sunday. There was a woman and infant inside a home, being broken into by a man. The first officer on the scene was punched, bit, choked by a suspect, who also tried to disarm the officer. The member of the Mounted Police got the upper hand and arrested the alleged perpetrator. The officer has been treated for injuries suffered in the scuffle. A 29-year old Cote First Nation resident faces a number of charges.

Portage la Prairie Fatality

A Manitoba man is dead, the apparent victim of a grass fire. Yesterday afternoon, firefighters were called out to a grass fire south east of Portage la Prairie. They put out the fire, and then found a body inside a shed. It appears the 78-year old homeowner went out to stop the flames, and died in the attempt. The Fire Commissioners office is assisting in the investigation. You are reminded that the grass in Manitoba is dry, and fire can threaten both your life and property.
