Manitoba unemployment down, Canada up

Unemployment in Manitoba is down slightly.

The province records a jobless rate of 5.5 per cent for December, the third lowest amongst the provinces and well below the national figure which jumped 0.3 percentage points to 7.2 per cent.

Statistics Canada figures show that Manitoba’s decrease is partly explained by more people working full time, with some 700 more people finding full-time work last month.

Part time employment numbers slipped about by 17-hundred jobs, but people exiting the workforce offset those losses and allowed for the provincial unemployment rate to drop in the month-to-month figures.

The Manitoba unemployment rate was unchanged compared to a year ago.
