The Hawks played without the injured Jonathan Toews but still won at home as Marcus Kruger scored the game-winner.

Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 41st and 42nd goals of the year and added an assist. Bobby Ryan had a goal and an assist for the Ducks.

Tomas Vanek scored the eventual winner while Ryan Miller made 30 saves to get the win.

Jeff Carter scored three goals to lead Columbus. The Sharks lost their fourth straight game.

Former Jet Shane Doan had a pair of goals while teammate Radim Vrbata had two goals and an assist for the Coyotes. Michael Boedker scored the winning goal in the shootout.
There are three games in the NHL tonight: San Jose is at Toronto; Washington is at Ottawa; and Boston plays at St. Louis.
In other NHL news, there was a trade yesterday: Kyle Quincey was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Steve Downie and then, moments later, Quincey was sent to Detroit for a prospect and first round draft pick in 2012.
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
Despite two goals by Dominick Favreau, the Brandon Wheat Kings were beaten 5-4 in a shootout by the Kootenay Ice at Westman Place last night. That put a halt to a four-game winning streak for the Wheaties. The Wheat Kings play again on Friday night as the Swift Current Broncos invade Westman Place: It’s a 7:30 start and also the second game of a four-game home stand.
KEYSTONE JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE
And there were two playoff games in the Keystone Junior Hockey League last night: Cody Waterman and Dylan Peters each had two goals and an assist as the Selkirk Fishermen beat the St. Malo Warriors 9-2 to take a 2-0 lead in that best-of-five quarter-final series. While the North Winnipeg Satellites beat the Peguis Juniors 4-3 as the Satellites took a 2-1 series lead. There are no games tonight but two tomorrow: North Winnipeg plays at Peguis while Norway House meets the Falcons in Lundar.

It’s free-agent frenzy time in the Canadian Football League and t was good day for the Montreal Alouettes. The Als signed Aaron Hunt, an import defensive tackle who spent six seasons with the B.C. Lions and was tremendous in the Grey Cup last November, and Mark Restelli, a linebacker who played three seasons in Edmonton. All this just a few days after signing all-star linebacker Rod Davis away from Edmonton.

In the Majors, pitchers and catchers have reported to spring training camps. Baseball is back. Seattle announced rthat long-time leadoff man Ichiro Suzuki would bat out of the No. 3 hole this season. Japanese star Yu Darvish arrived at Texas’s camp and impressed the catchers on his first day, American League MVP Justin Verlander had his first workout yesterday and said his goal is to be better than last year when he was almost unhittable and oft-injured Canadian pitcher Erik Bedard arrived at Pittsburgh’s camp and says he feels the best he has in his career. As we did last year, NCI FM will report live from spring training from March 14 to 23.

Dwyane Wade had 30 points and 10 assists. Chris Bosh had 20 points and 10 rebounds. LeBron James had 18 points. The Heat are now 26-7.

Seven Blazers scored in double figures. LaMarcus Aldridge led the way with 21. San Antonio’s 11-game win streak was stopped as the Spurs fell to 23-10.

It was the second-straight one-point win for the Cavs. Antwan Jamison had 32 points and 10 rebounds while 19-year-old rookie Kyrie Irving had 25.

Roy Hibbert had 30 points and 13 rebounds for the Pacers who are now 20-12.

Marc Gasol had 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Grizzlies improved to 19-15 and the 76ers fell to 20-13.

The Canadian women’s curling championship continues today in Red Deer, Alta., Jennifer Jones’ Manitoba team enters the day in second place with a record of 5-2 after beating Nova Scotia 8-3 and Saskatchewan 8-7 in an extra end yesterday. Manitoba plays B.C. this morning and the Territories tonight.

The Manitoba Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Council will hold the Westman Aboriginal Sport Forum on Friday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brandon Friendship Centre in Brandon, Man. There will be Keynote Speakers from Softball, Special Olympics, Lacrosse, Badminton and Sport Manitoba Westman. The registration fee is just $10 and includes a T-shirt and refreshments.

UFC 144, “Edgar vs. Henderson” will be held Sunday, February 26 in the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Because it’s in Japan, it will run in prime time on Saturday, Feb. 25 here in North America. The main event is the vacant UFC lightweight championship between No. 1-ranked Frankie Edgar and No. 4-ranked Ben Henderson. Other bouts on the main card include a light-heavyweight fight between Quinton (Rampage) Jackson and Ryan (Darth) Bader; and a welterweight fight between Japan’s Yoshihiro Akiyama and American Jake Shields.

Winnipeg MMA star, Eric (Odalay) Perez will return to the cage on April 20 at Wreck MMA at the Casino Lac Leamy in Gatineau, Quebec. Perez, one of Canada’s Top 10 bantamweights, will face a rising star in the division, Ontario’s (Relentless) Randy Turner. The 33-year-old Perez is 7-2 as a pro and figures a win in April might get him that shot with UFC.

The next Fox-UFC TV show will feature a bout between former contender Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks. It will go on May 5, in East Rutherford, N.J. UFC also announced that the event's main card will be headlined by lightweights Nate Diaz and Jim Miller, and that fight will be televised live on Fox.
BOXING
In boxing, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines has agreed to fight undefeated Timothy Bradley of the United States for Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The 33-year-old Pacquiao is 54-3-2 with 38 knockouts while the 28-year-old Bradley is 28-0 with 12 KOs. |
