Better than average: More Manitobans returning to work in June

Manitoba’s economy is faring better than the national average since the COVID-19 pandemic began, at least in terms of unemployment.

Statistics Canada says this morning that Manitoba had an unemployment rate of 10.1% for June, which is more than two points better than the national 12.3%.

All provinces saw an increase in employment.  Locally, there were 29,000 jobs added compared to May.

Nationally, 953,000 people were back at work, with about equal numbers of full and part time workers getting back on the job.

While the numbers are generally good across Canada, Stats Canada says some groups are struggling to find work.

Students were singled out by the agency as being particularly hard hit.  Nearly a third of all students were without work in June.  That is nearly triple the number from a year ago.
