Indigenous-based harm reduction work, the Aunties and Kookums do it all

The Mino Pimatsiwin (good life) Sexual Wellness Lodge is a place where you can Go Ask Auntie, talk to a Kookum if needed, or access harm reduction supplies. The Lodge has you covered.

The Aunties are a fleet of Indigenous women and two-spirit/non-binary folks who go out into the community to ensure that the community has what it needs. Services provided by the Aunties include STBBI testing, safer drug-use/sex supplies, and resources for health care professionals.

“So that is our primary thing is people who use drugs and people who have sex. Our goal is that they do it the safest way possible,” says Sammy Brown, the coordinator of the Lodge. Sammy hails from

The Kookums are a group of grandmothers who offer emotional and ceremonial support. From cedar baths to teachings about traditional medicines. Kookums also takes the lead on running the monthly pipe ceremonies which community pipe carriers are encouraged to attend.

“Harm reduction and this work that we do here is Indigenous-based. It is within our blood, it’s in our traditions, it’s in the way that we are so it’s easy” Brown concludes.

The Lodge is open daily for door services if you need harm reduction supplies. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Lodge has a drop-in program from 11 am – 3 pm where they do activities and have all available services.
