Southern Chiefs’ Organization transforms Hudson’s Bay Company building
The historic Hudson’s Bay Company building in downtown Winnipeg is getting a new purpose. The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is leading the transformation, turning it into Wehwehneh Bahgahkinagohn, which means “it is visible” in Anishinaabemowin. Once complete in 2028, the space will include affordable housing, cultural spaces, and job opportunities for First Nations people.
Grand Chief Jerry Daniels shared how the project will support First Nations families, create economic opportunities, and help revitalize downtown Winnipeg.
Along with housing, the building will also include services to help Indigenous residents, such as healthcare, education, and community programs. Daniels also shared that this project is about more than just the building itself, it’s about building a sense of community, creating opportunities, and making space for First Nations culture to be celebrated and shared.
