Womens Shelter opens up to serve Northern Communities

 In NCI News

Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation also known as Nelson House, has opened up a safe space for women who are victims of domestic abuse.
The grand opening happened November 7th 2018, and has the capacity to house four women with larger families and four women with smaller families all at the same time. The shelter will collaborate with other First Nations towards ensuring families receive the support they need, such as access to counselling and programs with an indigenous focus.

In order to access the shelter, women will have to be facing issues relevant to family violence, and will not be used as a detox center as alcohol and drugs will not be tolerated. It’s just 1 of 5 shelters being built for northern First Nations communities across Canada.
As of today the official Name is being debated and will be announced once they reach a decision.
Nelson House is located about 670 kilometers north of Winnipeg and 65 kilometers west of Thompson.
